Do you own my book Nurses Reflection Diary – Revalidation? Thank you. Many nurses ask me: is it still right for NMC revalidation? The short answer is yes.

If you’re wondering whether its for you see my article on it called Reflection – Gibbs Model and Applied Example

Nurses Reflection Book cover

Nurses Reflection Diary

The NMC has not changed the reflection rules in the last five years and you still need:

  • 5 short written reflections every 3 years
  • 1 reflective talk with another nurse, midwife or nursing associate
  • to show what you learned and how it links to the NMC Code
  • to use the official NMC forms

My diary follows the Gibbs model and gives you blank pages to write in your own career stories. That is still exactly what the NMC and the Royal College of Nursing suggest.

So What is New?

The NMC is now reviewing the Code and revalidation for the first time in over 10 years. It wants the rules to fit modern nursing – including fair care for all, staff well-being, safety, and safe use of digital tools and AI. The public consultation on the process was due in late 2026 but it has been delayed. The final decisions are not expected until 2027 – with changes starting in 2028.’

To read more about the actual revalidation proposals go to: Proposed NMC Revalidation Changes

Possible Changes

There is discussion about possible changes to revalidation, such as:

  • your confirmer will usually be your manager
  • a stronger role for your reflective discussion partner
  • a must use form for feedback
  • more random checks on the process and compliance
  • up to 12 weeks extra time if you are ill, on parental leave or bereaved

There are also some concrete proposals of what to focus on such as:

  • anti-discrimination including anti-racism, bias, stigma
  • public protection/safeguarding, inappropriate record access – learning from inquiries
  • working cultures, safety, wellbeing, trauma-informed listening in maternity
  • professional accountability in inquiries
  • professional behaviour outside practice
  • safe use of digital / AI
  • public health and health inequalities

These are ideas only. They are not rules yet. Please keep following the current rules issued by the NMC.

Action

I will fully review Nurses Reflection Diary – Revalidation when the NMC publishes its final conclusions and update the book if I need to. I will post the news here first. Until then, you can keep using your diary with confidence.

For you: Check your revalidation date, use the official NMC forms, and do not include patient names in what you write.

Thank you for trusting my work.
