Introduction
When I wrote The Ambitious Nurse, I wanted to share everything I learned about building a thriving (nurse) career outside of a traditional hospital setting. This post is a brief glimpse into one of the most important lessons I cover: ‘How to create passive income.’
What is passive income?
Passive income is money you earn with no need to be constantly involved. It’s revenue that comes in while you’re sleeping, enjoying a cup of tea, or even on holiday. Sounds too good to be true? It’s not! It’s a real strategy that works for many people. So, if you’re thinking about leaving your 9-to-5 to start your own business; passive income is a safety net? Because going it alone is a big, exciting step, and you may have to earn money to survive. This fear holds many ambitious nurse’s back from taking the leap into a self-employed life. But here’s a secret: financial freedom doesn’t have to mean working more hours or finding endless clients.
The key is to have money working for you in the background. Think of it as a safety net. While you’re busy with clients and bidding for contracts, these passive income streams could be earning money, providing a cushion during slow times or when you’re just starting out.
Passive vs. Recurring Income: What’s the difference?
- Passive income generates money on its own after an initial effort. For example, if you create a digital course on managing anxiety, you only have to build it once. After that, you can sell it over and over again with minimal effort. Other ideas include writing an e-book, creating a mobile app, or designing templates.
- Recurring income is more predictable. It’s money your business can expect to receive regularly, like a monthly subscription fee. For health professionals, this could be a client who pays a set fee each month for a year-long coaching program or a wellness package.
You don’t need both, but it’s a smart idea to have them. Passive income is your buffer against those slow periods—like a quiet summer or the holiday season—while your recurring income provides stability. Having a diverse portfolio of income streams means that if one slows down, you’re not left with nothing.
This is especially important for new entrepreneurs who rely heavily on one-on-one visits. As we all learned from the pandemic, things can change in an instant, and it’s a huge relief to know you have more than one way to bring in money.
Beyond the Bank Account: The Real Perks of Passive Income
Passive income isn’t just about money; it’s about freedom and less stress.
- Expand your reach. By creating an online product or a social media presence, you can reach a wider audience, possibly from all over the world. This increased awareness can naturally lead to more clients for your main business.
- Prevent burnout. The best part? Passive income lets you grow your business without having to spend every waking moment seeing clients. This means less stress and less chance of burnout. It’s a win-win for both your business and your well-being.
Passive Income Ideas for the Ambitious Nurse
Getting a passive income stream started takes some initial work. Creating a course or writing a book takes time, but once it’s done, it’s an asset that keeps paying you back.
Here are a few ideas to get you started:
- Sell Your Resources Online: Do you create successful policies, templates, or planners for your work? Why not sell them online? You’ve already done the hard work of creating them for yourself; now you can sell them to other nurses who could use them. You can use platforms like Etsy or even your own website.
- Become a Brand Ambassador: Do you love certain health and wellness products? You don’t have to be a big-name celebrity to earn money by promoting brands you believe in. Even small, niche audiences are very attractive to companies. Reach out to brands you admire and see if they’re interested in a partnership.
- Start a Blog or Podcast: Are you a writer or a natural storyteller? Starting a blog or a podcast is a fantastic way to create passive income. You can sell your own services and even charge other businesses to advertise with you. You can also try affiliate marketing. This is where you team up with a brand and promote their products or services on your site. When someone buys something through your unique link, you earn a commission. It’s usually free to join, so there’s no big upfront cost.
- Create an Online Course or E-book: Your knowledge as a nurse is highly valuable. People are hungry for reliable, expert information, and they’ll pay for it. See my non-fiction section here on my own website where I write about health and safety at work
The online learning market is booming because:
- People love the flexibility of learning from home.
- Online courses are often cheaper than traditional education.
- You can reach a huge worldwide audience.
- Once you create a course, you can sell it an unlimited number of times with no shipping costs!
Platforms like Udemy, Coursera, and Teachable make it easy to get started.
