✍️ Why Victoria Brought a Crutch and Limped for Weeks – The Story behind A Quizzical Life
Let’s be honest—who hasn’t fantasised about faking an injury to escape a toxic workplace?
Victoria, the heroine of A Quizzical Life, actually does it. We all know someone like her. The quiet one. The one who knows the capital of Burkina Faso, the chemical symbol for tungsten, and the name of every obscure 1970s Eurovision winner—but can’t quite navigate a conversation at a party. Denied time off for the biggest quiz of the year, she fakes an illness—and things unravel spectacularly. But beneath the comedy lies a deeper story: one of bullying, burnout, and the healing power of doing what you love.
Why I Wrote This Book
I wrote this book in 2020 and felt it warranted a bit of love and attention which was something I avoided back in pre-covid days. As I relate to Victoria in a lot of ways, I love quizzes, trivia and obscure facts about simple things. What I wanted to do was for readers to understand how another’s mind might work and explore what happens when a woman, with this mindset, and on the edge decides to take control—albeit in a slightly ridiculous way.
Victoria’s love of trivia becomes her lifeline, in a time of great upheaval for her, and her journey is one many of us can relate to: feeling unseen, undervalued, and desperate to reclaim joy.
