• How clueless were you?: Was it a ‘whoops, didn’t see that‘ or a ‘nah, we’ll risk it?’ Culpability is key.
• How big is your Company?: Large companies get larger fines. It’s about making it sting. The courts look at your turnover to make sure the fine is painful enough to make sure you learn, but not too big to put you out of business.

Got a fine that makes your stomach hurt? You can fight it! But you’ll need:

• Solid reasons: ‘They’re mean‘ won’t cut it. You need legal grounds.
• Courtroom savvy: Appeals go to higher courts. Get a lawyer. Trust me.
