Let’s get one thing straight: I am not a Luddite. I love tinkering with computers. I possess more gadgets than a small electrical retailer. I write, I create art, and I can wrangle technology into submission.
So, when I decided it was time to declutter my very large, very full “maximalist” house to embrace a sleeker, “modernist” future, I thought: Vinted. No problem.
A daytime TV program I’d watched recently buoyed this confidence. You know the type—bright studio lighting and presenters with white, twinkling teeth, full make-up and suspiciously high energy levels — as her alarm clock sounded. She ran a breezy, five-minute segment on how to set up a Vinted profile and make up to £10K per year.
“It’s just so easy!” gushed the presenter, tapping her phone three times. Snap a photo, write a sentence, and boom—you’re an entrepreneur. A piece of toast.
Hooked, I mentally listed all my old coats and suits that I hadn’t worn for years. Yes! Better than a charity shop…
Reader, I am here to tell you her segment was a lie.
If setting up Vinted takes five minutes, then painting the Sistine Chapel took an afternoon.
We’re off to See the Wizard of Vinted
I sat down with a cup of tea at 11:00 am, ready to “snap and sell.” First, just check the instructions took ages. By 5:00 pm, the tea was cold with a brown ring staining the cup, my hair was standing on end, and my Cockapoo was looking at me with deep concern because I had been muttering to a leather coat for forty-five minutes trying to get the lighting right.
It wasn’t just the photos. It was the descriptions. Suddenly, the pressure to describe a coat felt like writing a dissertation. Is it “vintage” or just “old”? Is this scratch “character” or “damage”?
I read through other descriptions. Yes, I could do that…
And then came ‘The Moment.’
I must have hit the wrong button during the verification process, or perhaps my first photo attempt was just bad, because suddenly a stern notification popped up on my screen. I’m paraphrasing here, but the gist was essentially:
“Vinted is threatening you with a lifelong ban if you don’t try harder.”
I stared at the screen as an app gave me a telling off. Apparently failing at selling my clutter. I’ve raised a family, navigated a career, and mastered complex software, but apparently, listing a second-hand coat was my undoing. Seems I had added a famous brand (TALC) none of the smart bots which check the adverts had heard of and I was likely scamming would be customers.
To the people on TV who make starting something new look effortless: I don’t believe you and yet I keep falling for the same old lies – I am a marketer’s dream.
Starting new things is hard. It’s messy. It involves six hours of frustration for what should take five minutes (and I like to think I know what I am doing on the internet.)
But here is where the plot twists. As I mentioned, I am a gadget lover. When faced with a digital mountain, I don’t retreat; I call for digital reinforcements – Ai. Two actually – Chat GPT and Gemini. I am not one to give up without a fight.
Enter AI.
If Vinted wanted me to “try harder,” I was going to bring in the heavy artillery. I fired up my AI assistants (my new best friends) and we got to work. I moaned about the other bot. My Ai’s, moaned about them. Seems that Vinted bot only had a few brands it liked; the others could go to hell. I corrected my ‘mistake’ with Ai help. Energised, I made another cup of tea and crafted bios that made me sound friendly yet professional. We wrote descriptions that made leather coats sound essential to any winter wardrobe. We structured thank-you notes. It gave me hashtags and well, loads of stuff. I submit again and hold my breath. Will the bots carry out their threat and ban me forever?
After another 20 minutes, waiting for my advert to be approved. I got the go ahead and can breathe again.
Suddenly, the now seven-hour struggle made sense. I wasn’t just “selling stuff”; I was building a little digital corner of my home. A little piece of me.
Vinted
So, my Vinted shop is finally open albeit with one item. It took blood, sweat, tears, and artificial intelligence to get here. Soon (?) it will be full of treasures from my journey from maximalist to modernism.
Please come and buy something soon. My house is still too full, and frankly, I need the validation after that standoff with the app. Should be ready in about three months, I think. 😒
